What is ‘Breaking Down the Barriers’?

It is a unique project for disabled people and those who have additional needs looking to build their employability skills, confidence and self-esteem. We assist disabled people to find work by providing intensive 1:1 support and group activities supported by our expert tutors and peer mentors.

Members are encouraged to develop a social media presence using Facebook, blog writing etc.,  This raises some important issues and show to employers the benefits of employing disabled people.

 ‘Blogging Down the Barriers’

Participants also have the opportunity to co-deliver disability awareness and equality training.

Courses usually run for between 10 and 12 weeks up to two days a week.

Project Mission statement:

We offer a unique programme dedicated to supporting people with disabilities to access employment. We ‘break down the barriers’ to show employers the positives of employing ‘people like us’ through the use of social media

Aims of Project:

  • Raise confidence and self-esteem
  • Develop skills in social media and employability
  • Demonstrate the positives of employing disabled people
  • Influence decision makers
  • Develop ‘speaking up’ skills
  • Develop skills in training and presentation techniques
  • Work in partnership with other organisations to bring about change
  • Find employment opportunities

What we do:

We help disabled people to recognise the skills they have which are easily transferrable to the workplace and provide practical hands on experience in a variety of areas such as speaking up for themselves.

We enable participants to develop practical skills such as making presentations, using social media and IT skills. In addition we will assist participants to develop other work transferrable skills such as teamwork, timekeeping, leadership and communication.

We also employ disabled people as sessional tutors and peer mentors and can offer volunteer placements where people can build their skills in a supportive environment.

How you can help:

We are keen to hear from anyone who may be able to help us in areas such as doing ‘Mock Interviews’, CV Updating, offering work experience or volunteering
