Working confidently and inclusively with colleagues of different ages.

Generational Inclusion: Challenging Age Bias at Work is a practical and engaging workplace training programme designed to help employees recognise age-related assumptions, challenge generational stereotypes and work more effectively with colleagues across different ages and career stages.

The course explores how age bias can affect workplace relationships, communication, development opportunities and perceptions of capability.

Rather than reinforcing generalisations about particular generations, participants are encouraged to recognise individual difference, remain curious and develop more inclusive approaches to collaboration.

Recommended course length: Half Day
Delivery: Available face-to-face or online, depending on organisational requirements.

Overview

For the first time, many organisations have colleagues from several generations working alongside one another. This can bring a valuable range of knowledge, experience, perspectives and skills.

However, assumptions about age can also influence how people are perceived and treated.

Younger colleagues may be viewed as inexperienced, entitled or lacking commitment, while older colleagues may be assumed to resist change, struggle with technology or be approaching the end of their contribution.

Generational labels such as Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials and Generation Z can provide a starting point for conversation, but they can also oversimplify people and reinforce stereotypes.

This course supports employees to distinguish between genuine individual needs and assumptions based solely on age. Participants explore how curiosity, inclusive communication and knowledge-sharing can strengthen relationships across generations.

  • Understanding age diversity and generational inclusion
  • Age as a protected characteristic
  • Direct and indirect age discrimination
  • Age-related harassment and victimisation
  • Ageism and generational bias
  • Common stereotypes affecting younger and older colleagues
  • The opportunities and limitations of generational labels
  • How assumptions can influence workplace decisions and relationships
  • Communication preferences across different individuals and career stages
  • Workplace language, humour and age-related “banter”
  • Digital confidence, technology and assumptions about adaptability
  • Knowledge-sharing, mentoring and reverse mentoring

Ready to Create a More InReady to Strengthen Collaboration Across Generations?

Challenge assumptions, improve communication and help colleagues recognise the value that different ages and experiences bring to the workplace.

Every programme can be contextualised around your organisation, workforce, sector and working environment.

What this course is – and isn’t

This course is:

  • An age-bias and generational-inclusion awareness programme
  • Relevant to employees of every age and career stage
  • Focused on communication, collaboration and inclusive workplace behaviour
  • Practical, reflective and grounded in realistic workplace situations
  • Designed to challenge stereotypes rather than reinforce them
  • An opportunity to recognise the value of age-diverse teams
  • An important component of a wider organisational approach to inclusion

This course is not:

  • A programme that assigns fixed characteristics to different generations
  • Based on the assumption that everyone of a similar age thinks or behaves in the same way
  • Focused only on discrimination affecting older employees
  • A substitute for legal or HR advice
  • A formal investigation or case-management programme
  • A forum for discussing identifiable individual cases
  • A standalone guarantee of organisational compliance

This ensures that participants gain useful insight without replacing one set of assumptions with another.

Moving Beyond Generational Stereotypes

Generational categories can help introduce conversations about social change and different formative experiences. However, they cannot reliably explain every individual’s values, communication preferences or approach to work.

Two colleagues of the same age may have very different experiences, while colleagues from different generations may share similar priorities and working preferences.

The programme therefore uses generational labels critically. It encourages participants to replace assumptions with curiosity and explore what each colleague needs to communicate, collaborate and perform effectively.

Contextualising the Programme

The course can be adapted to reflect:

  • Your organisation’s workforce and age profile
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion policies
  • Dignity at work and anti-harassment policies
  • Apprenticeship and graduate programmes
  • Learning, development and progression practices
  • Hybrid and flexible working arrangements
  • Digital transformation and the introduction of new technology
  • Knowledge retention and succession planning
  • Mentoring and reverse-mentoring initiatives
  • Relevant anonymised workplace scenarios
  • Organisational values and expected behaviours

Any contextualisation is agreed in advance, and identifiable employee cases should not be used as training scenarios.
